The 8 Marks of Professional Magic
2009 June 2
Magicians in the Philippines know that the Anti-Christ wears the “666″ mark on his head.
Well, he is not the only one who has a mark. Philippine magicians, too, have marks, by which they are recognized. Whereas the Anti-Christ has “666″, magicians have only eight. I listed them all below.
If you want to be the anti-magician in the Philippines, just add 658 more marks to the list below to get a total of 666 marks.
- If you don’t mess up a trick—or even if you do and the audience is unaware of the mistake—you have the mark of a true professional. This is called the “proficiency and competency” mark.
- If you’re feeling low and troubled by life’s problems yet still go on stage and perform a highly energized show, giving the client his money’s worth and more, then you have another mark of a true professional. This is called “the show must go on” mark.
- If your program oozes with aesthetics—it’s flow beautiful to watch, it’s contents emotionally appealing —then it is said to have the “artistic mark.”
- If your presentation tells a little story, employs music, dazzles people with lighting effects, and rivets audience attention with theatrics, then it can be considered to have the “creativity” mark.

- If your show makes the audience laugh and cry, lets them experience thrill and suspense, and touches them emotionally, then it can be said that your show has the “entertainment” mark.
- If you arrive at the venue early, set up your stuff without causing mayhem to others, perform an outstanding show, and deliver everything you said you will do on the contract, then you can be considered to have worn the “reliability” mark.
- If you don’t publicly belittle the achievements of other magicians to get gigs, then you have one more mark of a true professional. This is called the “clean competition” mark, as opposed to “bitter and cutthroat” rivalry.
- Lastly, if you don’t expose magic tricks, wittingly or wittingly, for fame, glory or fortune, in sickness or in pain, for richer or …oops, that’s a wedding ceremony—I mean, if you don’t expose magic tricks for any reason, then you have the truest, quintessential mark of a true professional magician, even if you’re an amateur. This mark is called “character and class”.
